The tampo's core decides the ink feel. Three tested: fine felt—steady load and even release, the choice for dense wujin work, about ¥5 each; high-density foam—drinks ink fast but floods easily, best on practice plates; silk over cotton floss—the finest tone for pale cicada-wing rubbing, bound in 40-count silk or polyester taffeta. Make them 4–6 cm across with a 3 cm tied handle, and "break in" a new tampo on waste paper until it feeds evenly. Verdict: felt for finished work, foam for laying ground tone.
