Hammer heads start from 1045 or 4140: forge 1045 at 1050–1100°C, punch and square it, water-quench from 820–850°C and temper 200–300°C for HRC 50–55 — good for cross- and straight-peens; 4140 oil-quenches with less cracking. Handles are hickory or ash, wedged and oiled with linseed. Anvils adapt from rail steel or forklift tines: build up the face with 4140 weld, harden above HRC 55, and pass a ball-drop rebound test of 70% from 250 mm. Brian Brazeal's hammer drawings, circulated through the ABANA community, are the classic DIY blueprint — start with a 1.2 kg rounding hammer.
