Historic plates suffer pinpoint corrosion and crusted old ink. The British Museum prints department protocol: soften old ink locally with ethanol, dab 5% citric-acid gel 10–20 min point-by-point (never immerse—corrosion products dissolve into lines), pulp-wash 3 rounds with deionised water, inhibit 24 h in 3% BTA ethanol, then store flat at 45±5% RH in acid-free folders. Corrosion maps are compared monthly; any active spot triggers retreatment. ---
