Dental casting uses phosphate-bonded investment (refractory above 1300°C, compensating alloy shrinkage), with patterns now typically 3D-printed directly from intraoral scans. Gold alloys cast at 950–1050°C; cobalt-chrome needs 1350–1450°C with induction melting and vacuum-assist casting machines. Burnout runs in two stages — hold at 700°C, then final temperature for 30–45 min — to keep the ring from cracking. Orthopedic implant prototypes and instrument handles likewise go through small lost-wax batches before moving to precision forging or machining for volume production.
