Italian and Japanese premium pen makers chase silver wire into brass barrels: turned, knurled or spiral-precut, inlaid by hand with 0.3 mm wire and polished overall, the inlay sections alternating with urushi lacquer—20–40 h each. Production models switch to laser grooves with press-set wire, eight times faster though rounder hand-feel suffers. Barrels are only 12–15 mm across, so wire runs must cross grip stress lines or loosen; finished pens endure 50,000 cycle tests with repair rates under 0.5%.
