Forging Cymbals: the Zildjian Tradition

Cymbals use B20 bronze (80% Cu, 20% Sn, too hard to cold-work, so billets are hot-rolled): discs are rolled at 750–800°C to 2–4 mm, die-forged or hand-hammered into the cup and tone grooves with repeated 650°C anneals, then lathe-tuned — cutting 0.2–0.5 mm to set the thickness taper — and finally hand-hammered for voice, with several thousand hammer points per cymbal as its tonal fingerprint. The Zildjian family founded their trade in Constantinople in 1623 and kept the alloy secret for four centuries; Istanbul Mehmet in Turkey and Chinese makers now also produce B20, with hand-hammered lines priced 2–5 times lathed-only models.
