Between the 1910s and 1930s Constantin Brâncuși bypassed cast reproduction and shaped copper and brass directly: in the Bird in Space series he forged and arched sheet, welded sections and kept the fine hammer marks, polishing in stages with fine abrasive and soapstone to split mirror and satin zones. Holding that "the surface is the work", he lifted hammering and chasing from decoration to sculptural language—a lasting influence on modern metalwork. ---
