The throne, screens and dragon columns of the Hall of Supreme Harmony carry mid-Qing fire gilding, surveyed during the 2005–2008 restoration: XRF showed 3–6 μm layers at 68–74% Au, matching Qing "ku jin" alloy. Work followed identifiable, minimal-intervention rules—exposed copper was re-gilded by amalgam in small patches with mercury vapor captured through activated-carbon scrubbing; dull areas got only DI-water and neutral-soap swabbing plus protective wax, keeping historical patina and wear intact. ---
