Rembrandt-era intaglio practice survives intact: etched copper plates lose greys after 200–300 impressions as lines wear, so museum editions are strictly limited and plates corner-snipped to kill future pulls. The Rembrandt House still demonstrates the original workflow — hard ground, stepped FeCl3 etches for tonal scale, hand wiping to leave a 0.1 mm plate tone. Modern shops edition 20–50 pulls with pencil numbering; the edition plus signature remains the core of collectible value. ---
