A typical medieval niello mix is silver 2, copper 1, lead 1, sulfur 1 by weight (~2:1:1:1). Sulfur and metals are heated together in a crucible until molten, then cooled and crushed to powder. Always work under a fume hood—sulfur vapor and lead fumes are highly toxic. ---
