DIY Stakes & Retuning Second-hand Hammers

Make raising stakes from rail steel, forklift tines or scrap shafting: cut 250–400 mm lengths, flame-shape teardrop or T profiles, grind the working face to 400 grit or finer, and seat them in maple or elm stumps 300 mm deep. Retuned second-hand ball-peens are the best value: regrind face curvature, round the edges 2–3 mm, and heat-treat 1045 heads by water quenching from 820–850°C and tempering at 250°C to HRC 48–52. European smiths haunt flea markets for Victorian raising hammers — a reworked hammer with a new handle costs a third of new stock and often carries a better face; the whole job needs only an angle grinder, belt sander and a hardness tester.
