Makerspace Casting Corners & the Open-source Furnace Movement
Makerspace

Makerspaces across Europe and North America run "casting corners" seeded by open-source plans from Lindsay Books, Gingery's The Charcoal Foundry and the BackyardMetalcasting forum founded by Lionel Oliver: propane crucible furnaces with No. 8–16 graphite crucibles pouring 5–15 kg of bronze per melt. Hard rules: no melt without two people present, damp-sand floors, liability insurance and welding-grade PPE. Community group-buys of crucibles and colloidal silica save 15–20%. The model lets hobbyists meet copper melting inside a safety net before any formal training.
