Homebuilt small-foundry tools start with 1045 medium-carbon steel: roll and weld ladles from 6–8 mm plate, dress the lip and brush on graphite wash; forge tong arms, water-quench from 830–850°C, temper at 500–550°C for strength with toughness, and proof-test at 1.5× rated load before use. Rammer heads can be welded from lathe scrap with hardwood handles.
