Gong Sinking in Javanese Gamelan Forging

The great gongs of Javanese gamelan are sinking at its most monumental: a φ60–100 cm high-tin bronze disc sits over a deep pit-form while four smiths sink the centre 15–20 cm by relay hammering, then raise the boss ring by ring and tune the whole—scraping the bore lowers pitch, hammering the rim raises it. A large gong takes a central-Javanese Pande workshop 5–10 days and 20+ re-heats, delivered only after being tuned against the full ensemble. No machine replaces this process; it remains the living core of bespoke gamelan making.
