Cold Joining Wood Fittings to Raised Copper

Heat-sensitive areas of raised work (kettle handles, tray feet) take wood fittings by cold joining: forge a Ø5–8 mm tang or rivet ears into the copper, drill hardwood (black walnut, cherry) and fix with epoxy plus brass rivets, keeping wood at 8–12% moisture against later cracking; hot handles use thick stock with mica insulation. Unlike soldering, cold joins skip annealing, spare the hammer texture and patina, and stay removable for repair — common at Gyokusendo and Western workshops alike. Chamfer, wax the whole piece, and let the wood/copper contrast read as design: pale wood deepens with patina-in-use.
