Contemporary artists are reviving rubbing as a printmaking language: instead of classical dabbing, they run textiles and reliefs straight through presses or road rollers (an extension of gyotaku logic), or pull only sections of an etched plate, leaving vast untouched paper. A Beijing print shop builds custom 1.2×2.4 m jobs: 6 mm plates to resist deflection, sectional roller inking, paper soaked 6 h and flattened before printing. Editions run 3–8 pulls at ¥3,000–8,000 per plate—the "unpredictable hand-rubbed texture" is becoming the very mark that separates handwork from digital print.
