The "three-layer" taotie of late Shang bronzes—thunder-scroll ground, raised motif, incised lines—came from staged piece-mould work: build up the motif on the clay model, press the 5–8 mm linked leiwen units into the field with scrapers and stamps, then incise the lines. For modern reading, a Shore A10 micro-silicone pull at 0.02 mm reveals stroke direction, showing whether the ground was stamped whole or in sections; Xiaomintun mould finds show bone styluses and bronze gravers. 3D-printed mould copies need hand-recut tool marks to read authentically.
