The Statue's 2.4 mm copper skin grew a 0.1–0.4 mm patina in ~25 years of New York's marine air, mineralogically layered: brochantite-type basic copper sulfate Cu₄SO₄(OH)₆ dominant outside, antlerite Cu₃SO₄(OH)₄ inside — a record of peak SO₂ decades. The 1980s restoration proved the crust dense and protective, so only armature and patch repairs were made, never stripping. Lesson for artificial verdigris: 3–5% ammonium sulfate sprayed daily for 2–3 weeks best mimics the layered natural crust; chloride systems stay looser.
