In traditional silversmith apprenticeships the sinking test falls in the second year: sink a φ80 mm, 1.2 mm silver disc 25 mm deep within 2 h, judged on wall-thickness variation ≤0.15 mm, no through wrinkles and no more than four anneals. The stake-hole size is assigned at random to force "stake reading". UK schemes such as the Goldsmiths' Centre keep similar graded tasks as prerequisites for the finishing piece.
