Traditional sand-casting apprenticeships run three years: year one is riddling and ramming, with mold hardness checked at 75–85 on the hardness tester; year two covers pattern draw, patching and cutting gates, tapping the pattern loose 0.5–1 mm per side before drawing; year three is independent medium-sized work plus furnace duty. Germany's Handwerkskammer foundry trade runs 3.5 years with intermediate and final exams; China's five-grade foundry skill ladder assesses molding defect rates and output at each level.
