Large Tibetan gilt bronzes are usually raised in sections: copper sheet is hammered over matching stakes into head, hands and drapery, welded into a whole, then chased with scrollwork and the six ornaments, and finally fire-gilded by amalgam baked at about 450 °C. A 60 cm seated figure uses 12–18 sections and 150–250 h of chasing; chased depth is checked against canonical proportions, a hallmark of Sino-Tibetan metalwork exchange. ---
